I think when Sealion say "East Asian" he means something else. Not just mere geographic boundary but a specific definition. Apparently if you look at geography, then Vietnam is in East Asia, so is Cambodia and the Philippine. (observe the map i posted above)
What he meant is this "East Asia," the UN defined version:
It has political, economic, and cultural meaning behind it, not just mere geography. This is confusing because if you look at the economic system, political system, and culture, then Vietnam fall into the East Asia category mostly similar to that of China . However, not all political system in Asia is alike either, so I don't know what standard they used to group these countries together. Vietnam is different, politically from Japan and South Korea. And North Korea is politically and economically different from South Korea, Japan, and the rest. Now, if you look at geography then Vietnam is fallen to the South East Asian category defined by the UN.
However, since this is a UN defined map and they chose which countries to consider as "East Asian." Vietnam is not included, instead it is South East Asian categorized. So leave it at that.
Take home point: This" East Asia" is nothing but arbitrary and manmade.
And these people decided that VN is South East Asia. That's the end of that.
