i have marine friends stationed in japan and they said that jap are very stuck up and racist.
... that can be true ... for example, if you don't speak japanese, it will be almost impossible to find a job here. Maybe, once again, it's because it's an island. Japanese are very hospitable to outsiders and short term tourists etc. and will shower them with meals, take them on sightseeing trips and generally show them a good time. Actually work here, deal with Japanese officialdom, or worse, be a non-white foreigner living here and you will see an ugly side of japanese racism. But things are changing because youg japanese people are more open-minded :)
